What is a GST Calculator?

A GST Calculator is a free online tool that helps businesses, traders, and consumers calculate the Goods and Services Tax applicable to any transaction in India. It handles both GST Exclusive (adding GST on top of the base price) and GST Inclusive (extracting/reverse-calculating GST from a total), plus shows the CGST/SGST/IGST split.

GST was launched on 1st July 2017 as India's unified indirect tax, replacing multiple older taxes like VAT, Service Tax, Excise, and CST. It is applied based on the location of supplier and recipient (intra-state or inter-state) and the type of goods or services.

GST Calculation Formulas

GST Exclusive (Add GST):
GST Amount = Base Amount × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Total (Incl. GST) = Base Amount + GST Amount

GST Inclusive (Reverse Calculation):
Base Amount = Inclusive Total ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)
GST Amount = Inclusive Total − Base Amount

CGST & SGST (Intra-State):
CGST = GST Amount ÷ 2 | SGST = GST Amount ÷ 2

IGST (Inter-State):
IGST = Full GST Amount (100%)

How to Use This GST Calculator

1

Choose Mode

Select Exclusive to add GST, or Inclusive to extract GST from a total.

2

Enter Amount

Use the slider or type the exact amount manually.

3

Select GST Rate

Pick from 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, 28% or enter custom rate.

4

Choose Transaction Type

Intra-State (CGST+SGST) or Inter-State (IGST).

Real-World GST Example (Illustrative)

Consider a business selling electronics worth ₹1,00,000 to a customer in the same state (intra-state transaction) with a GST slab of 18%:

  • Base Amount: ₹1,00,000
  • GST @ 18%: ₹18,000
  • Split: CGST @ 9% = ₹9,000 | SGST @ 9% = ₹9,000
  • Total Invoice Value: ₹1,18,000

If the same transaction were inter-state (say Delhi to Maharashtra), the entire ₹18,000 would be collected as IGST instead of the CGST+SGST split.

Common GST Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Confusing Inclusive vs Exclusive: Quoting base price and later adding GST changes the total significantly.
  2. Wrong CGST/SGST Split: Both must be exactly half of the total GST for intra-state transactions.
  3. Ignoring HSN/SAC Codes: GST rate depends on the correct classification of goods (HSN) or services (SAC).
  4. Forgetting Input Tax Credit (ITC): Businesses should offset GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales.
  5. Non-Compliance with E-Invoicing: Businesses above ₹5 crore turnover must generate e-invoices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST and how many slabs are there in India? +
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on supply of goods and services in India since 1st July 2017. There are 5 primary slabs: 0% (exempt), 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, plus special rates for certain items like 3% for gold and 0.25% for rough diamonds.
What is the difference between GST Inclusive and Exclusive? +
GST Exclusive means the base price does NOT include GST — you add GST on top. GST Inclusive means the price already includes GST — you must extract/reverse-calculate the base price and tax component using the formula: Base = Total ÷ (1 + GST Rate/100).
What is CGST, SGST, and IGST? +
For intra-state (within same state) transactions, GST splits equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state (between different states) transactions, the full tax is collected as IGST (Integrated GST).
How is reverse GST calculated? +
Reverse GST extracts the tax component from a GST-inclusive price: Base Price = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate/100). GST Amount = Inclusive Price − Base Price. For example, if the total is ₹1,180 at 18% GST, then base = ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 and GST = ₹180.
Is GST applicable on all goods and services? +
Most goods and services fall under GST, but some are exempt: alcohol for human consumption, petroleum products (currently outside GST), electricity, and certain essential food items at 0%. Certain goods fall under special rates: 3% on gold, 0.25% on rough diamonds.
What is Input Tax Credit (ITC) in GST? +
Input Tax Credit allows businesses to offset the GST paid on purchases against the GST collected on sales. This eliminates cascading tax effect and ensures only the value-added portion is taxed. To claim ITC, the purchase invoice must be valid and the supplier must have filed their GST returns.
